Obituary

Ruth Carol (Grover) Martin was born May 5, 1931, at Protection, KS to Cyril H. Grover and Jettie E. (Anthony) Grover, the fifth of seven children. She left this life to join Her Savior and loved ones in Heaven on Friday, Feb. 11, 2022 at the age of 90.

Ruth attended school at Protection for grades one through eleven then her family moved to Ft. Worth, TX so her father could attend Southwestern Seminary.  She attended Pascal High School in Ft. Worth, TX her senior year.  She was involved in music, both band and vocal, throughout her school years.

After graduating from high school, Ruth attended Texas Wesleyan College where she sang with the Texas Wesleyan singers for two years. She transferred to Oklahoma Baptist University for her junior year in college, and it was there that she met the man to be her husband.  Her college roommate just happened to be from Dustin and she introduced Ruth to Claude Martin.  She and Claude were married in 1951.

Ruth and Claude had three children. Throughout the years they were a very close family who tended to do everything together.  Claude was a farmer/rancher and Ruth went to work as a bookkeeper in Henryetta when their youngest child was only six months old. She first worked at the Henryetta Clinic for Dr. Carlton Smith, later moving to August Burzio's accounting office.  In the early 1960's she started working for PPG glass company as an accountant, and later when they got their first computer, a big mainframe, she became the first computer operator in Henryetta. When the glass plant moved to Burkburnett, TX, Ruth began working for the American Exchange Bank, where she worked until her retirement.

Always a hard worker, Ruth not only worked a forty hour work-week, but for many years she got home from work at about 5:30 in the evening, just to go to the dairy barn and help milk cows and clean up milking equipment, before going to the house to cook supper, wash dishes, and then spend an hour or two sewing clothes for her girls and for herself. Over the years, she also played the piano or led the music for church every Sunday morning and evening.

Music was a huge part of Ruth's life.  She began singing in a trio with her two older sisters when she was a little girl standing on the end of the piano bench.  They later provided music for her father's evangelistic work, providing music for many revivals.  She was also a talented musician who played the piano, organ, accordion, bassoon, xylophone, and the base drum.  Hymns and southern gospel music were sang around her piano her entire life, and she and her girls enjoyed singing acapella as they did dishes and other chores around the house.

After Ruth retired, she did the accounting for the family feed store and ranch, but her joy was her grandchildren.  During the last weeks of her life they were all able to spend time with her, bringing her much joy.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents and her husband;  two brothers, Howard Grover and Harvey Grover; and three sisters, Zella Shrauner, Alma Bowyer, and Martha Glenn.

She is survived by: One son, Claude, Jr. and Nickie Martin of Dustin, and two daughters, Paula and Larry Baker of Dustin, and Jo and Walter Richmond of Holdenville; her grandchildren, Nikita and Dean Adkins and family of Weleetka, Jacob Martin and Amber Williams of Dustin, Reena and James Page of Henryetta, Hannah and Jonathan Shearer and family of Glenpool, Rian and Julianna Page and Amaya, Claryssa and Jaston Heneha and family, and Luke Page, all of Henryetta, Josh and Channing Baker and family of Midwest City, Peter and Tessa Baker and family of Moore, William and Shelby Richmond and family of Holdenville, Kori and Trey Trammell and Little Trey of Wewoka, and Karli Page of Henryetta, and RJ and Kenzie Richmond and Bentleigh of Seminole, and Kami Richmond, and Marli Richmond both of Holdenville; One brother: Ed Grover of Cherokee, OK; A special nephew, Mike Weis of Chandler Arizona, and numerous other nieces, nephews, and friends.
