Wetumka
Maxine Scott Harjo, "Cherk" to most Creek friends, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, August 18, 2018. Several family members and friends were at her bedside. Maxine was 89 years old.
She was born April 28, 1929 to Tom Scott and Emma Hully Scott, the youngest of three children. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Louis Harjo; brother, Tom Scott, Jr.; sister, Anna Laura Spaniard; daughter, Judy Harjo; and two grandsons, Robert Lena and Dylan Rogers; and her double first cousin, Edward M. Scott—Ed was more like a brother to her than a cousin.
Louis and Maxine were united in marriage in 1946. In the year 1948, Judith Ann was born, and 9 years later, Kendis Lynn arrived. Louis and Maxine made their home in Los Angeles, California. In the year 1963, the family moved back to Oklahoma and made Wetumka their home.
Maxine began a career as a nurse aide at the Wetumka General Hospital. She worked at the hospital many years. She became an experienced worker in several departments. Everyone knew Maxine. She was also very active in her tribal town. Maxine was a member of the Thlopthlocco Tribal Town Business Committee. She was seated as an advisor.
Her hobbies included canning pickles, working crossword puzzles, watching Jeopardy, crocheting, and going to Walmart after church on Sunday. She loved going to her church, Living Water. Due to her health getting worse, Maxine was no longer able to attend. Her daughter Kendis would go over the morning service with her. They would have a discussion and she enjoyed talking about the Bible.
Maxine is survived by one daughter, Kendis and Paul Branscum; four granddaughters, Robin and Victor Marshall, Monica Berryhill, Erica Fish, and Ash ley Fish; four grandsons, Robert Lena, Dylan Rogers, Eric and Stephanie Branscum, and Brandon Bray; three great-grandsons, Victor Ryan Marshall, Ethan Rogers, and Joseph Jon Berryhill; three great-granddaughters, Kayla Marshall, Erin Rogers, and Emalyn Berryhill; and one great-great-granddaughter, Grayson Johnson.
Farewell services will be held at the Living Water Church in Wetumka, and her final resting place will be at the Thlopthlocco Cemetery. Brad Burton, Mark Smith, and David Dunson will officiate. Pallbearers will be Victor Ryan Marshall, Eric Branscum, Brandon Bray, Ethan Rogers, Benjamin Spaniard, and David Chastain. Honorary Pallbearers will be Victor Marshall, Paul Branscum, Michael Spaniard, and Bill Rogers. Services are under the direction of Williamson-Spradlin Funeral Home of Wetumka and Weleetka.
