Lawrence Dale
Ross
Jul 2, 1942 — Dec 21, 2024
Lawrence Dale Ross was born on July 2nd,1942 in Hinton, Oklahoma and passed from this life peacefully at his home December 21st, 2024 in Edmond, Oklahoma. His parents were Mahdeen and Alvin Ross. He was one of three boys, Lloyd Allen was the oldest, Danny Kay was the youngest leaving Dale as the middle child. The boys grew up and remained close throughout their lives and loved spending time together. He grew up on the family farm in Sickles, Oklahoma and learned to work in the peanut fields from an early age and started driving the tractor at eight. Dale liked to tell of one of his favorite childhood memories when the whole family, aunts, uncles and cousins would all get together for a "chicken picking". They would gather and have a big outdoor chicken picking where they would pluck and prepare the chickens and take them to the meat locker in Hinton to enjoy throughout the year.
Dale grew up in a time and in an area where most families lived and worked on their farms. If Dale wanted to go see his buddies like Milton Wells he would just get on his pony and cross through the fields. He also enjoyed riding 3 miles down the road to see his grandparents, Edith and Amil Ross. Edith and Amil enjoyed taking the boys to Hinton on Saturdays, along with some of their cousins. They would spend the entire day going to an afternoon matinee; the men would sit around and visit while the women did their shopping. Dale remembered it as a wonderful time and season of his life.
Dale was a 1960 graduate from Sickles High School. The Class of 1960 had four girls and four boys, including Dale. They were the final class of students to graduate from Sickles High School before consolidating with Lookeba School. After graduation, he got a job in Oklahoma City and later was drafted into the US Army where he served most of that time in Korea even though Vietnam was very hot at the time.
Shortly after returning home in the summer of 1966, Dale and Renee just happened to run into each other in August of that same year in Anadarko Oklahoma. Prior to that, Dale remembered Renee as his best friend, Alton's pesky little sister. That re-meeting turned into their first date and they married February 22, 1967. Dale passed away two months before they would have celebrated 58 years of marriage. Following their honeymoon, they moved to Oklahoma City where they both worked there for a couple of years. Dale became despondent with city life and longed for a life similar to the way that he grew up in Sickles. Together they made the decision to move back to Lookeba and moved into a mobile home down by Renee's father's lake. While living there, their daughter Carrie Dionne was born in June of 1969. She was one year old when they built a home on Lookeba Sickles Road. They were members of the Lookeba Pentecostal Holiness Church.
In February, 1974 they moved to Wetumka, Oklahoma. Dale took over the farming and ranching for Renee's dad Ogland Barger. April 6, 1975 they welcomed their son, Chad Dale. As a family, they made Wetumka their home. Dale continued to farm and ranch and was named Farmer of the Year in 1991.
Dale, Renee and their children were very active in the Pentecostal Holiness Church in Wetumka. In 1994 Renee became the pastor of Wetumka Pentecostal Church until she retired in 2013. Dale absolutely loved Renee being the pastor and she refers to him as "the wind beneath her wings". He ran the sound board at the church. He loved to aggravate Renee while she was in the pulpit by adjusting volumes, and playing loud, wild praise and worship songs. They both loved to tease and aggravate each other and he thought his antics were so funny. Renee not so much. When Renee felt that the Lord was leading her to resign from the church, he knew it would be hard for him as well because he had enjoyed their time there so much.
In the fall of 2014 they moved to Mustang, Oklahoma to be closer to their son, Chad. They loved their place in Mustang and enjoyed hosting an annual 4th of July party including food, fireworks and live music. In 2020 they decided to downsize and be even closer to Chad and his family and they moved to Edmond, Oklahoma. Together they endured the hardest loss of their lives when they lost Carrie in March of 2020.
Dale enjoyed fishing, quail hunting, boating, and riding around with Renee in the pasture checking cattle. During their retirement they enjoyed cruising, traveling, going to family reunions, playing cards, games and spending time with Carrie, Chad, Jolinda and their grandkids.
Dale is preceded in death by his parents, Alvin and Mahdeen, his brother Danny, and his daughter Carrie.
He is survived by his wife, Renee Ross, of Edmond, Oklahoma, brother Lloyd Ross, of Oklahoma City, son, Chad Ross and wife Jolinda of Yukon, Oklahoma, grandchildren, Ross Burrus of Lewisville, Texas, Taylor Burrus of Dallas, Texas, Carter, Cooper and Lillie Ross of Yukon, Oklahoma and many other family members and friends.
